Manchester city is a metropolitan borough of Greater Manchester; it's situated in the South-Central part of North West England. Historically, Manchester is well-known because of the first railway station, music and the sports developed in the territory; it's most famous sport clubs include two Premier League football teams:
Manchester City and
Manchester United.
The name Manchester is believed to have come from the Ancient Roman period when the first settlement was known as
Mamucium which probably comes from a Celtic name. When Romans invaded Britain they established a stone fort but when the Roman army left Britain the tower fell into ruins.
It's believed that the first inhabitants of Manchester were from the Early Neolithic communities and from the late Bronze Age due to the artifacts discovered in the city center. According to the investigation, the Brigantes were the major Celtic tribe.
During 7th century, when Saxon arrived at this place, they built a new city, smaller than the first one; the city was called
Mamucian, in honor to the fort, but in time the name changed from
Mamecester to
Manchester.

The Middle Ages represented the creation of many towns in the entire England, and Manchester rapidly grew into a town because of the trade and commerce growth of Manchester and the efforts of
Robert Grelly. It was the house of annual fairs, for which they developed different kinds of industries across the city such as: wool, leather, carpentry and more.
Manchester suffered the English Civil War between the King and Parliament and Manchester also suffered from a plague outbreak in 1645; but after that, the cotton industry overtook wool in importance and made the economy of the city improve.
The Industrial Revolution was an important event that took place in the whole of Europe and Manchester wasn't the exception; as the city became the most productive centre of cotton processing (some called it
Cottonopolis) and it developed many other industries which is why the city was known as the greatest industrial city of the world.
World War I interrupted the access to the export markets, and due to the Great Depression the city suffered many changes.
World War II also affected the city, especially in the city center where many buildings were destroyed. Modern Manchester is considered as the second city of the United Kingdom in importance according to both, cultural and historical criteria.
